As far as we know, this is the variety used to make the world renown hot sauce. The small, thin-fleshed fruit measure about 8 x 30mm and are hot – the American, Dave DeWitt, states that heat levels range between 30,000 and 50,000 SHU. Fruit are produced late in the season, when they ripen from a yellowish green to an orange and then red.
The plants are medium-size, with an open, branching growth habit. For gardeners wanting to grow an American legend, then Tabasco is the variety to go for.
