Capsicum chinense
Seed type: OP
Dorset Naga, measuring about 1,000,000 SHU, is one of the hottest chillies in the world. Its scorching heat is indescribable, and combined with a distinctive fruity flavour, this chilli will give you an incredible eating experience; but must always be treated with the utmost respect.
The wrinkled, wedge-shaped fruit ripen from green to red, and can be harvested at either stage of maturity. They can be up to 2 to 3 cm wide at the shoulders and 4 to 5 cm long, and are produced on large, late maturing plants that need plenty of space to grow. When grown in pots the fruit can be a lot smaller.
Please Note: Dorset Naga is not an easy chilli to grow and novices may be disappointed with their results. There are two particular times in the plants' development – germination and pollination – that require special attention. Instructions are sent with all packs of Dorset Naga, and we strongly recommend that they are followed.
Genuine Dorset Naga seeds are harvested from plants produced and grown by us in Dorset. The seed crop is raised in a dedicated polytunnel to prevent cross pollination with other Capsicum varieties. To ensure quality after the seed has been harvested, dried and cleaned a sample is sent to a DEFRA approved Official Seed Testing Station for a germination test. This is repeated every 6 months.
Dorset Naga is our own variety; it was developed by us for our fresh chilli business, Peppers by Post. Years ago we wanted something special to offer as our 'hot' chilli and we looked at the little known Bangladeshi chilli, Naga Morich. Being a variable landrace variety we made selections over several years, to produce a 'distinctive, uniform and stable' line that, as we live in Dorset, we named Dorset Naga. It was then that we had its heat level tested; to our amazement it was considerably hotter than the then Guinness world record holder. Since then it has become clear that Dorset Naga and Naga Morich belong to a family of chillies, originating from Bangladesh and NE India, that are vastly hotter than their nearest rival, and truly the hottest in the world.
Sea Spring Seeds – the sister company to Peppers by Post – is the only authorised seller of Dorset Naga seeds. The variety is registered with us. Other sources offering Dorset Naga are not legitimate, did not get the seed from us and should be viewed with great suspicion. So when buying Dorset Naga seeds, order only from Sea Spring Seeds; accept no substitutes.
